John X. Prentice

Founder  ·  Operator  ·  Builder

I've built two companies from zero — one sold for C$60M, one became the largest facility of its kind on Earth. Now I'm looking for the next hard problem.

About

I Build Things: Companies, Products, and the Teams That Run Them.

The industry was cannabis. The problems were enterprise software, government-grade compliance infrastructure, and precision manufacturing at scale. Those problems exist everywhere.

I'm a hands-on founder and operator with 15 years building companies from zero in highly regulated, technically complex industries. At Ample Organics I wrote code, designed systems, and scaled a compliance platform to power over 80% of Canada's licensed cannabis producers — processing more than $1B in GMV — before a C$60M acquisition. At JointCraft™ I built a 60,000 sq. ft. manufacturing operation from scratch, personally deploying the ERP, designing production tooling on a 3D printer, and growing the team to 150 people and 36 million units a year.

What makes me different from most executives: I don't just set direction — I'm in the stack. I've built and shipped software, integrated AI and computer vision into operations, implemented ERP and quality management systems, and prototyped physical hardware. I understand AI transformation not as a boardroom concept but as something I've applied at ground level to compress costs, eliminate paperwork, and create competitive moats. That combination of strategic vision and technical depth is rare, and it's where I do my best work.

"John is in the 1% of the 1% of entrepreneurs. He's the rare founder who can set the strategy, build the product, and scale the operation — all at once."

What I'm looking for

Full-time CEO or CTO at a technology company — early to growth stage preferred — where the role requires both strategic leadership and hands-on technical depth. Particularly drawn to AI, regulated industries, manufacturing tech, and deep software. Also open to board or advisory roles where I can contribute pattern recognition from building in complex, high-stakes environments. Open to relocation. If you need an operator who can set the vision and help execute it, let's talk.

Career

Professional Experience

Three companies built from scratch — enterprise software, space & defence, and advanced manufacturing. Different industries, same pattern: find a hard problem, build the infrastructure to solve it, and scale.

Founder & CEO
JointCraft™
Toronto, Ontario
2021 – 2026

The world's largest pre-roll manufacturing facility — a 60,000 sq. ft. federally licensed operation producing classic, infused, and specialty pre-rolls for 30+ of Canada's leading cannabis brands, plus edibles, vape filling, and full turnkey brand solutions.

  • Built and scaled the largest pre-roll manufacturing facility in the world — at peak, approximately 1-in-8 pre-rolls consumed in Canada were made at JointCraft.
  • Developed proprietary technologies that deliver hand-crafted quality at machine scale — solving one of the industry's hardest manufacturing problems across classic, infused, blunt, and specialty formats.
  • Scaled to 36 million units in 2025 with 77% year-over-year revenue growth, serving 30+ national brands with a team of 150.
  • Built in-house ERP, EQMS, and MES on a fully custom stack — recognized by Health Canada as Canada's only fully paperless licensed producer; also holds one of Canada's few Health Canada Research Licences.
  • Invented proprietary production mechanisms via FDM 3D printing, reducing manufacturing costs and enabling precision at scale across hundreds of thousands of units daily.

Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation
Toronto, Ontario
2020 – Present  ·  Part-time

Space and defence company developing mission-critical, dual-use technologies — including the LEUNR portable nuclear micro-reactor, quantum sensing, robotics, and space systems for terrestrial and lunar applications.

  • Co-founded the company alongside Daniel Sax and Dieter MacPherson; secured multiple contracts with the Canadian Space Agency across lunar water extraction, space medicine, and nuclear power programs.
  • Pitched and won CSA funding for LunaPure — a self-sustained lunar water purification system and Aqualunar Challenge finalist — and the HYDRO+ program for processing lunar ore into oxygen and hydrogen.
  • Program expanded into C3 (Connected Care Capsule) — a CSA-funded modular medical clinic delivering advanced telehealth and health AI to remote and Indigenous communities across Canada, built as a terrestrial proof-of-concept for future space medical infrastructure.
  • Company has since diversified into LEUNR — a portable low-enriched uranium micro-reactor based on Canadian Nuclear Laboratories' SLOWPOKE-2 technology, targeting lunar deployment by 2029 and Arctic community power by the early 2030s.
Founder & CEO
Ample Organics Inc.
Toronto, Ontario
2014 – 2020

Bootstrapped from a dining room table into Canada's dominant seed-to-sale compliance platform — the infrastructure backbone that Health Canada and the entire licensed producer ecosystem ran on through legalization and beyond.

  • Helped write the first licensed producer application approved under Health Canada's MMPR framework in 2012 — the regulatory insight that led directly to founding Ample Organics.
  • Scaled to serve 70–75% of all Canadian licensed producers, processing over $1B in GMV across Aurora, Aphria, Organigram, and 100+ other sites — becoming critical national infrastructure for Health Canada's oversight of the entire supply chain.
  • Delivered the world's first national government cannabis tracking system for the Medicinal Cannabis Authority of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, built with support from the Government of Canada.
  • Grew 2,038% over three years — ranked #9 on the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 and #19 on the Globe and Mail's Top Growing Companies in 2019.
  • Led the C$60M acquisition by Akerna Corp. (Nasdaq: KERN) in 2020 — one of the largest cannabis technology exits in Canadian history.
